Breaking: Next-Gen Consoles Could Cost $900 or More, Analysts Sound Alarm

Industry analysts are now predicting that upcoming Xbox and PlayStation consoles will launch with prices starting at $900—and that figure may prove optimistic. The forecast signals a seismic shift in the gaming landscape, as consumers increasingly balk at paying premium prices for dedicated gaming hardware.

"We're looking at a price point that could alienate the majority of the casual gaming market," says Mat Piscatella, executive director at Circana. "At $900, a console becomes a luxury item, not a mass-market device." The warning comes as fresh data reveals a dramatic slump in hardware sales, with the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 experiencing declines of 70% and 40%, respectively.

Hardware Sales Tumble: Spending Drops 27% Year-over-Year

According to Circana's latest report, total games spending dropped 4% compared to the previous year, but hardware spending plummeted a staggering 27%. The decline is most acute in the traditional console sector, where price hikes have become routine. Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles have seen multiple price increases in the last 18 months, eroding consumer confidence.

"The current generation is feeling the squeeze," adds Piscatella. "Even the Nintendo Switch 2 launched at $450 in the US—a 50% increase over the original Switch—and still saw a 10% sales drop. The market is sending a clear signal that these price points are unsustainable."

Background: The Console vs. PC Shift

For years, industry experts believed consoles would dominate PC gaming, relegating it to a niche hobby. Early generations of consoles were indeed the most popular way to play mainstream games. But that narrative has reversed with the current generation. PC gaming has expanded steadily, while console sales falter—a trend analysts attribute to rising hardware costs and the growing accessibility of PC alternatives.

"Younger gamers, particularly those in their teens and early 20s, have grown up in an environment where a console is no longer necessary to play the vast majority of games," explains David Cole, founder of DFC Intelligence. "They can game on a laptop, a phone, or a cloud service. The dedicated console is becoming a tough sell at these price points."

What This Means: Consoles as Luxury Items, Casual Gamers Exit

The $900 price tag would effectively reposition next-generation consoles as premium devices for hardcore enthusiasts, leaving the broader market behind. Casual gamers—who make up the bulk of sales for blockbuster franchises like Call of Duty and sports games—may no longer justify the investment. "If all you want is the next Madden or Call of Duty, paying $900 for a box seems absurd," says Cole.

The implications for the gaming industry are profound. Publishers who rely on massive console install bases will face shrinking audiences. Meanwhile, PC gaming, mobile, and cloud services are poised to capture the disaffected. "The console market is at an inflection point," warns Piscatella. "If manufacturers don't rethink pricing and value, they risk irrelevance among all but the most dedicated gamers."

With sales already in freefall and price hikes continuing, the next generation of consoles may be the most expensive—and the least adopted—in history. The industry now watches to see if Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo can pivot before the collapse becomes irreversible.
